Nicole Stephens of Tufts University Named Metro Housing|Boston’s 2021 Lowell L. Richards Fellow

Boston, MA – Metro Housing|Boston has announced that Nicole Stephens of Tufts University has been selected as the 2021 recipient of the Lowell L. Richards, III Fellowship for Leadership and Public Service.

Stephens will complete her fellowship this summer with the Massachusetts Port Authority’s (Massport) Real Estate and Asset Management Department, where Lowell Richards was Chief Development Officer for more than ten years. The announcement comes on March 15, Lowell Richard’s birthday.

“This is the ninth year of the fellowship and we have continuously attracted very exceptional and competitive candidates,” said Karen Richards, Lowell’s wife. “Nicole possesses an extensive background in public policy and has a strong passion for urban planning and development. Lowell would be proud to have her represent him with this Fellowship. I like to believe that what we knew and loved about Lowell inspired this decision.”

“Over the last several years, we have had exceptional individuals work alongside us as Lowell Richards Fellows in the Real Estate & Asset Management Department,” said Andrew Hargens, Chief Development Officer at Massport.  “Nicole has outstanding credentials, and we look forward to having her join the team for the summer.”

Nicole is currently a Master of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning Candidate at Tufts University and expects to graduate in May 2022. She previously graduated from University of Massachusetts at Boston with a Master of Public Administration and from Boston University with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science. Nicole recently served as the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Caucus of Woman Legislators.

“Economic development is an opportunity to fundamentally change the trajectory of a neighborhood—for good or ill,” says Nicole. “I am excited for the opportunities that the Lowell L. Richards, III Fellowship will provide me and am looking forward to learning more about the impacts of economic development on a community’s trajectory.”

After graduating from Tufts, Nicole plans to return to public service either at the municipal or state level in Massachusetts.
