Massport to Host Fellowship for the Eighth Consecutive Year
Boston, MA – Metro Housing|Boston has announced that Steven Gu of Harvard has been selected as the 2020 recipient of the Lowell L. Richards, III Fellowship for Leadership and Public Service.
Gu, who is from Philadelphia, will complete his fellowship this summer with the Massachusetts Port Authority’s (Massport) Real Estate and Asset Management Department, where Lowell Richards was Chief Development Officer for more than ten years. The announcement comes on March 16, one day after Lowell Richard’s birthday.
“Each year, we continue to attract exceptional and very competitive candidates for the fellowship,” said Karen Richards, Lowell’s wife. “Steven possesses an impressive combination of life experiences and accomplishments that would have made Lowell proud to have him represent him with this Fellowship. I like to believe that what we knew and loved about Lowell inspired this decision.”
“Over the last several years, we have had exceptional individuals work alongside us as Lowell Richards Fellows in the Real Estate & Asset Management Department,” said Andrew Hargens, Chief Development Officer at Massport. “Steven has outstanding credentials, and we look forward to having him join the team for the summer.”
Steven is currently a Master of Urban Planning Candidate at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and expects to graduate in May 2021. He previously graduated from Swarthmore College with a B.A. with Honors in Urban Studies and Political Science. Steven also is currently a Research Assistant at Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership, a program that offers leadership and management training to mayors and city officials from around the world.

Richards III Fellowship is perfect for an urban planner who wants to understand the role of public agencies in shaping cities,” says Steven. “I am excited to learn more about the agency’s legal and economic decision-making process in creating more sustainable, equitable neighborhoods. After graduating from Harvard, Steven wants to pursue a career in the public sector, either in Boston or Philadelphia, or head abroad to work at an intergovernmental organization, such as the United Nations or Asian Development Bank.
